Viridor Credits Scotland celebrates its first million in East Lothian

A warm evening in Dunbar saw nearly 100 community activists meet to celebrate the spending of £1million of landfill communities funding in East Lothian. Viridor Credits Scotland, managed by Forward Scotland, has been operating for nearly 10 years and has funded a number of high profile local projects including the John Muir Birthplace, The Scottish Seabird Centre and the Hallhill Healthy Living Centre as well as dozens of equally valuable local improvements led by local people.

Communities and their assets

During 2007/08 we began to investigate some of the issues that can enable or hinder communities to have a greater degree of ownership of assets in local areas. For many buildings and land offer a tangible opportuntunity to contribute in their community.
Many assets are held in trust for the public by public bodies including local authorities whilst others can only be realised when purchased from private owners.

Community Assets and the Railways

Forward Scotland believes that there is significant potential to contribute to the regeneration of Scotland's railways and to provide space for local groups by bringing unused and underused space back into use on platforms across the land. There are over 300 railway stations lying in the heart of communities and more can be done to bring them into 21st Century use.
