Forward Scotland carries out its work through a range of development projects and grant schemes, supported by information exchange. Working with strategic partners, our development projects research key themes and issues of sustainable development to produce innovative and practical solutions. Through the design and delivery of grant schemes we help communities across Scotland improve their local environment and achieve a better and more sustainable quality of life. Forward Scotland's core activities can be separated into three main areas:
- Current projects – concepts that we are currently working on
- Publications – output from out research, conferences and consultations
- Funding – delivering grant schemes for community-based projects promoting sustainable development
Forward Scotland's research activities and grant schemes produce a wealth of information of value to community groups and other organisations. This information is disseminated through publications, workshops, seminars, conferences and the Community Webnet. The Community Webnet is a one-stop shop for Scottish community groups carrying out projects which improve the quality of life for local communities. The site contains a wealth of resources to help groups carry out projects in their local community, learn from the experience of other and share their own experiences.

Current Projects

Forward Scotland's development programmes are designed to encourage a strategic and integrated approach to sustainable development and are delivered in partnership with key stakeholders. Partners may include public, private and third sector organisations with projects addressing issues at national, regional and/or local level. The focus of each development programme reflects the priority themes of sustainable development in Scotland: resource use, waste management, energy and travel. Other programmes focus on key economic sectors. Forward Scotland welcomes expressions of interest from potential partners. Our support can include both financial and in-kind contributions and span all stages of project development and delivery, from initial concept through implementation to completion and evaluation.

The principle of open access to information underpins the work of Forward Scotland. We produce a wide range of publications including research reports, information bulletins, consultation responses and others. Forward Scotland is currently focusing on the following research areas:

Funding

Forward Scotland designs, develops and delivers a number of grant schemes offering funding to support practical, community-based projects promoting sustainable development. Some grant schemes are managed by Forward Scotland alone while we may be part of a wider management structure led by another organisation in others. Each scheme funds different types of project, with grants ranging from £500 to £300,000 depending on the scheme's criteria. This section contains more information about our current schemes as well as application forms and guidance notes for each. Forward Scotland welcomes approaches from grant distributors and can provide a transparent and accountable mechanism for distributing funds to community groups and other organisations across Scotland.
