Sandy is a mechanical design engineer and is principal of Gaia Research, the research and consultancy practice she founded in 1996 to develop sustainable solutions for the built environment.

Her degree in Engineering Design and Appropriate Technology (1985) encouraged the development of social and environmental awareness alongside a firm engineering discipline, resourcefulness, creativity and sensitivity.  This and her subsequent work reflects her long term interest in the social and ecological implications of engineering design.

She worked for many years within the building services sector developing research & disseminating information on passive design, resource efficient & clean technologies, healthy buildings and benign construction products & materials. She now works collaboratively with architectural, engineering, urban design and landscape practices to respond to the challenge of sustainable construction.

She brings to the Board experience of small business practice, technical innovation and training in sustainable design in academic and professional contexts. She has in the past written a significant number of refereed papers for engineering journals and international conferences but is currently focussed on communicating and implementing best practice in sustainable design in Scotland and beyond. She is a past chair of the Scottish Ecological Design Association and a Director of the Children's Parliament.
