The winners of the Champions for Sustainable Communities Awards 2008 have been chosen from a short list of finalists by the following finalists panel. Each panel member represents an aspect of this initiative, covering the environmental, social and economic spheres as well as the public, private, voluntary and community sectors.


  • Ruchir Shah (Chair) - Forward Scotland board director
  • Ruchir is Policy Manager for the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations. He leads SCVO's policy and research department, coordinating SCVO's work to develop policy in and on the voluntary sector. Ruchir was formerly SCVO's research and policy development officer, responsible for statistics on the size, shape and profile of Scotland's voluntary sector, and the programme manager for the CIVICUS civil society index for Scotland, part of a global initiative to assess the health of civil society around the world. He has also been responsible for leading SCVO’s work to develop insights into the future of Scotland from a voluntary sector perspective, and was editor of VIEW, Scotland’s foremost civil society policy journal. Ruchir also has a strong interest in the arts in Scotland and has been involved in a number of charities to promote Classical Indian music in Scotland; including roles as former vice-chair of the Indian Music and Dance Collective and secretary of Tabla Alba.

  • Cllr Alison Hay - COSLA spokesperson and Argyll & Bute Councillor
  • Alison is a local councillor for Argyll and Bute Council. She is currently the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA) Spokesperson on Environment, Sustainability and Community Safety.  Alison was Leader of the Council from 1999-2001. Fomerly a civil servant, her public service began in Argyll and Bute in 1988. Other local interests include being Chair of GRAB (Group of Recycling in Argyll and Bute) and Convener of Kilmartin Glen Steering Group.

  • Duncan McLaren - Chief Executive, Friends of the Earth Scotland
  • Duncan joined Friends of the Earth Scotland as Chief Executive in May 2003.  He has been an environmental activist, researcher and campaigner for 20 years.
    Duncan has served on a wide variety of boards and committees in the non-governmental and public sectors. Current appointments range from the UK Green Fiscal Commission to the Board of Changeworks. He holds degrees in Geography, Rural Resources and Environmental Policy, and Business Administration.
    Duncan lives in Edinburgh with his partner and two small children who remind him every day of the importance of campaigning for a sustainable future. When he has time to spare from childcare and work responsibilities he enjoys hillwalking.

  • Giles Ruck - Chief Executive, Scottish Community Foundation

  • Giles’ background is in the training and development of young people, chiefly the excluded and those with special needs. He holds a B.Ed. (Hons.) in Applied Education.
    He has worked for the Foundation since 2001, previously leading the grants programme and also undertaking fund development roles. Appointed Chief Executive in 2004 he is responsible for delivering the strategic vision of the Foundation’s Board. This includes ensuring effective leadership of the Foundation’s staff teams and prudent stewardship of fundholder resources, which ultimately support Scottish communities.

  • Professor James Curran MBE - Chair of Scottish Sustainable Development Forum and Entrading Ltd. Director
  • James has worked in the environment his whole life – from research into clouds, building an automatic weather station on Cairngorm, studying pollution in the sea, managing hydrological stations and assessing flood risk and installing flood warning schemes.  He then became Head of Science within the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and also Head of Environmental Strategy.  Maybe best known for speaking out widely and for many years on the threats of climate change, he left SEPA in 2006 to create Entrading, an eco-store in the centre of Glasgow selling environmental household goods.  He is chair of the Scottish Sustainable Development Forum.

  • Samantha Barber - Chief Executive, Scottish Business in the Community

  • Samantha started her career working in the European Parliament in Brussels for nearly four years as a policy advisor on the Economics and Monetary Affairs Committee. She returned to Scotland in January 1998 to take up the post of Director of Business for Scotland. She joined Scottish Business in the Community as Chief Executive in May 2000 and has a passionate belief in the power of Corporate Responsibility to bring about economic and social change for Scotland.  Over the last 7 years, Samantha has led the significant growth in SBC as the organization has responded to the changing environment and importance for. Samantha is also a member of the Business Advisory Forum at Glasgow Caledonian University. 

  • Wilma Campbell OBE - Highlands & Islands Enterprise board member
  • Wilma is a board member of Highlands and Islands Enterprise. She also chairs Argyll College and the audit committee of the University of the Highlands and Islands Millenium Commission where she also has experience as a governor.   In the past Wilma has been a member of the board of the Careers Service as well as a number of NHS bodies, and was chair of the NHS Community Development Programme.
    She has a professional background in education and is also a partner in two businesses.
    For services to economic development she was made an OBE in 2006.

    barryfalgate.jpg New chair for East Lothian Panel There's been a change on the decision making panel for Viridor Credits Scotland in East Lothian, with longtime chair Clive Barber moving south with his work and being replaced by Barry Falgate, Viridor Waste Management's Landfill Manager for Scotland.
