On 19 August 2009 representatives of the East Lothian panel for Viridor Credits Scotland went on a short visit to a couple of Edinburgh-based projects that have received grants from the programme in the last year. Both are in north Edinburgh, and both provide football facilities to local young people, and it's fair to say that both projects impressed and surprised those of the panel who were able to come along.
Spartans Community Football Academy is based in Pilton, with a 'vision is to provide the community of North Edinburgh with a community inspired, developed and managed facility, to help develop people of all ages sporting, social and life skills.' Tucked away behind the Ainslie Park Leisure Centre off Ferry Road, this community-managed facility gives an immediate impression of money well spent - reassuring for the grants panel, who's offer of £30,000 purchased sports equipment for the centre. Our thanks to Colin Hutchison for showing us around and giving so freely of his time, and our best wishes for the future.
Next stop was Lethem Park in Trinity, home to the Leith Boys Brigade. With two junior grass pitches and two senior grass pitches, the park regularly sees 20 Boys Brigade teams taking part on Saturdays during the season, and recently has also started providing training facilities for Hibernian Ladies FC. Situated behind a tenement on Ferry Road, the park provides a great facility for football in Edinburgh. Again our thanks to Pamela at the Boys Brigade for showing us around.
